Deer Hunters Association of Dearborn

To Whom It May Concern:

I'm an outdoorsy type person. I love lakes, ponds, rocks, tree-climbing, fishing, feeding birds, etc. I also like to sit in the UC and watch the deer run across campus. I think it's a very pleasant and interesting way to relax and just be. The deer and their fawn running the grounds of UM-Dearborn, causing some to shriek in disbelief.

"Wow, we have deer on this campus. I never knew!"

I remember my first encounter with a deer on campus. Our sorority was camping out at the infamous rock next to the UC, when all of a sudden a deer appeared out of nowhere! At first I was frightened, but then I realized that the deer was much more frightened of me as it began walking backward toward the library. After that night, I had plenty more sightings of deer!

I wanted to express my concerns toward the Deer Hunters Association of Dearborn (fictional). I am worried that there is a hidden society near campus that captures deer for their own gluttoness pleasures! "Why, you ask?" Well, it's been almost an entire year since the last time I've seen a deer on or around campus. NOTHING, AND THEY USUALLY DART IN FRONT OF MY CAR AT NIGHT!

There was this one time though, one of our sorority sisters hit a deer on her way to meeting (true story). It was a dark night, and her first time taking Michigan Ave toward school. Poor thing, both her and the deer, whom weren't injured might I add.

So I believe that either the DHAD, or my undisclosed sorority sister is the reason behind their disappearance.

If anyone sees any deer around campus, please tell them that I'm looking for them! Thanks!

Now That's What I Call Relief!

My plans for the summer were to work full-time and take 2 or 3 classes. Well, that dream was short lived when I saw the summer course catalog. Only one section of the classes that I need are available, which sucks. But that's upper-level education for you. Anywho, with such short supply of classes and high demand, I was forced to take day classes during the summer. However, these day classes cut into my summer work schedule at the MLC. So, I'm only able to work 2 of the 4 days that we're open.

So, of course I spent the last 3 weeks stressing about finding work for the summer becuase I can't live off of 6 hours a week. I put in a word with a few of my professional colleagues, and WALAH! The perfect job opportunity lands in my lap during my lunch on Monday!

The office that I currently tutor for has a summer program for students called Gear Up. They were currently looking for someone to work as an Accountant for the program, and also needed some assistance around the office. On top of that, I work my own hours so my classes won't interfere with work at all. And I can still work my little 6 hours at the MLC!

I say this because I want to stress the importance of networking; it can seriously make you or break you! In these tough economic times and with the unemployment rate skyrocketing, it is definitely important to have people in your corner, those that will vouch for you and help you to spread the word.

A world without networks is like a blank sheet of paper, it can get you nowhere fast!

Finally, acknowledgment for accomplishment!

I've been a member of Kappa Omega Chi Sorority since 2005, and it has most definitely been the time of my life. I've met some of my best friends, networked with so many individuals, and have gained so much knowledge and leadership skills since I've been a member. My college career would not be what it is today had it not been for my loving sisters.

No doubt organizations have their bumpy roads, and I began to lose sight of why I joined the organization. I began to forget how far we've come as a group since I've been a member. I credit the lack of acknowledgment and the harsh image that members of the campus community have of our Greeks!

We are definitely a group of people to be proud of. We excel academically, host some of the most amazing philanthropy projects on campus, and are highly involved and represented across campus.

But now, we have something else to be proud of! We concluded our first Annual Greek Awards Ceremony this past Wednesday, and it was absolutely amazing! Not only because our sorority won 2009 Sorority of the Year, but also because all of the Greek orgs on campus came together in a positive light. Even those who didn't win showed excellent support, and for that they are winners in my eyes!

So before you misjudge or second guess joining a Greek lettered org on campus, come to our events to see what we're all about!

Not my week!

Two bad things at once, it doesn't get any worse than that!

Well, first the snow falls which I am not a fan of at all. The white skies make me drowsy and unable to focus. When I can't focus to save my life, I become highly irritable.

Then, the infamous toothache has returned to invade my dreams and keep me awake at night. I totally thought that It was over a few days ago, but upon my return to the dentist and after the Novocain wore off, there it was again! Let me explain... This isn't your ordinary after-my-visit-to-the-orthodontist tooth pain. It's belligerent and inconsiderate! It is the kind of pain that returns every 4-5 hours; the kind that wakes you up every night at 2:30a, right when your body has finally relaxed. Yea, it's pretty much a nuisance! My mouth has definitely been my worst enemy since February 28th! Not to mention the annoyance of knowing that to keep the pain under control, I must repeatedly take pain killers.

Seriously, if the snow and this killer toothache would subside, my life would be soooo much better right now!

As If I Don't Have Enough

I'm guessing since I feel like I have absolutely nothing to do in my spare time, I decided to write for the MJ for the last two issues. I'm an Accounting major, so I'm highly interested in money, debits/credits, budgeting, etc. You get the point! But I don't know everything, so in an effort to both learn and educate, I'll write! I enjoy writing anyway.

I'm No Fool!

The history of April Fools' Day (as I was told): In France, the New Year was originally celebrated April 1st. King Charles IX, in 1582 going by the calendar that we use today, changed New Years to January 1st. Because there was a lack of communication in the world back then, a lot of people didn't get the memo that the New Year had changed. Therefore on April 1st, those that were uninformed paraded the streets and were called fools by those who knew of the change. Hence, the infamous April Fools' Day!

I was never really into April Fools' Day; I guess because I never really understood the point of it. OK, I'm funny and all, but I find April Fools' Day to be a bit humorless... Can't people come up with better jokes and pranks? In all my years of living, I've never been fooled. Well, there was this one time but I won't get into that!

Until today... I'm sitting at the front desk in the Math Learning Center and my boss walks in. She does her usual "Good morning Brittney. How are you today?" Then she stops in her tracks and asks me, "what's on your face?" Me, always assuming I missed something on my way out of the house each morning, I begin rubbing my face feeling for blemishes or lotion. NOTHING! My facial rubbing was followed by a cute little, "April Fools" and skips to her office! HAHAHA, I'll now be branded with the title: "Most likely to fall for an April Fools prank."

I'll keep you all updated if someone else manages to get me today, although my guard will be WAAYYYYYY up!
