Okay, I know the blog won't be up for a few days, but I am
having such an unexpectedly awesome day here on campus that I thought 'What the
heck? It’s all about sharing the love.'
So today we had a Career fair that the lovely staff at Career Services puts on.
These are always really cool because you can actually walk away with a job, or
at least a prospect, in your field. Nifty! I thought, but what will they have
for me?
Well I got talking to a group of people from City Year. I'm really excited
about this gang. When you graduate, or even before you graduate, you volunteer
for a year to work with at risk youths in metropolitan areas. There's nothing I
like more than volunteering, especially when it comes with benefits. So I gave
them my resume and I'm hoping for an interview. If you're interested in
giving something back or making a difference in your community, look em up.
I feel really lucky to be going to a school that is so concerned about me not
only succeeding in class, but in life. The people here bend over backwards to
get the students experience in their fields. I've taken both internships and
co-ops here and I have to tell you what I learned was invaluable (like how I actually
hate Public Relations and shouldn’t go into it, and how dream jobs are achievable.)
So then I'm walking across campus on this unusually summer like day, and I hear
some awesome R&B coming from the center of campus. So I went to
investigate, because booming music isn't an everyday occurrence. It was the
Black Out BBQ. The Black Out BBQ is a campus wide BBQ put on by a bunch of the
black student organizations. There were people of every color and creed doing
the hustle by the reflecting pool. Never being one to resist a good hustle I
jumped right in. Yes, I am an awkward, stereotypical, 'white girls can't dance'
type person, but everyone was really cool and tried to teach me about 'rhythm'.
It turns out I have none. So I grabbed a burger and talked with a bunch of
people I've never met before about Shakespeare and Coke vs.
Pepsi.
It was just such a cool surprise. A normal day turned great just by turning a
corner and joining in. It wasn't exactly spontaneous (I'm sure the black
student groups put a lot of planning into this BBQ) but it was unexpected, and
made me love my school. The word 'Diversity' get's bandied about quiet a bit
these days, but you really don't understand how it improves your life until you spend some time living with
it. Besides the fat (or is it phat?) beats and access to top notch hummus the cultural mix here
teaches you a lot more about different view points that exist in the world than any international relations text book.
Also, I will soon be on the Columbia Journalism Review website. If you are into journalism there is no force greater than the CJR. They are
looking for Journalism students to write about why they want to go into an
apparently dying career. If you are down with the 4th estate, you should submit
your two cents too. I'll link the article once it's up.
P.s. If you want to check out the Michigan Journal (refered to as the MJ for those of us in the know) or check out my currnet place of buisness Detroit NPR, I've provided the links.
Goodnight and Goodluck.
